The BirthDay Trust is a new organisation, campaigning to encourage
safer pregnancy and safer childbirth for mothers and babies around the
world. We are working closely with women and health workers in Africa and Asia,
using film to raise awareness.
We celebrate birth, but ask - why are so many pregnant women dying? One death
every minute adds up to more than half a million each year. 1 in 16 women dies
in pregnancy in the poorest parts of the world and some young girls in Africa
face a lifetime risk of dying in pregnancy or childbirth of 1 in 8.
These figures reveal a gap between the rich world and poor world that is greater
than in any other aspect of health. And the death of a mother is not just a
health issue; it is a disaster for her, for her family and whole community.
A few generations ago, childbirth was often dangerous in the UK. But improved
public health, education and women's rights changed all that. So what has to be
done to save mothers' lives is well known. It doesn't take a lot of cash. But
it does take awareness and commitment.
Our campaign is part of the international safe motherhood and safer
childbirth movement, harnessing public support for political and practical
change.
