New film is a call to action
A moving new film called 'Beyond the Numbers'
shows how health workers are reducing maternal deaths by looking into what went
wrong - and then making changes.
Shot in South Africa and Kenya, the 23 minute film traces the stories of three
mothers who died, and one who just survived. It shows how their midwives,
nurses and doctors had the courage to investigate each case, and to take action
so that other mothers and newborns will be safer. The commitment, enthusiasm
and achievements of these health care workers is a joy to watch.
This film is a follow-up to the acclaimed advocacy film 'My
Sister, My Self'. 'Beyond the Numbers' is made by the same
Directors, journalist Brigid McConville and Dr Gwyneth Lewis (editor of the WHO
manual 'Beyond the Numbers'). It will be of particular interest to health care
workers and health service policy and service planners.
